We have an emergent curriculum that builds on the interests of the children. Topics for study are drawn and captured through conversations between children and teachers. Teachers will guide the children to make decisions about the direction of study, research methods to be implemented and also the various avenues to express the new knowledge they had gained.

We also have in place a robust Chinese program that emphasizes on appreciating the Chinese language, culture and values through stories, songs, drama, puppetry, art and the use of multi-media.

Apart from equipping children to converse in Mandarin, we would also introduce Chinese art forms, such as calligraphy and traditional Chinese musical instruments.

Here are the 6 main areas of learning that we focus on:

Language and Literacy
The four foundational skills of language learning are speaking, listening, reading and writing. In the presence of teachers serving as good role models in the spoken language, the children will participate in rhymes, songs, story-retelling, readers’ theatre, and group discussions to build strong verbal skills.

Our language program is well-supported by a highly recognized and effective phonics and reading program from the United States called Sing, Spell, Read & Write (SSRW). It incorporates a wide range of catchy songs and games that teaches the letter names, letters sound, vowels, vowel combinations and consonant blends. The whole phonics instruction is sequenced and systematic to build a firm foundation which will ultimately prepare the children to become confident speakers, independent readers and creative writers.

Each child is placed on an individualized reading program in K1 where his/her reading progress is carefully monitored. A wide range of genres will be introduced to the child, including readers, poetry, newspapers articles, comics, advertisements, etc. Creative writing would form an integral part of the kindergarten language program.

Our Chinese Language Program is designed to nurture a strong interest in the Chinese Language through songs, rhymes, stories, puppetry and games. At the same time, we will ensure that the children from Nursery Level will begin to recognize Chinese characters through pictorial stories later progress to learning strokes of Chinese characters in Kindergarten 1. Hanyu Pinyin, which is part of the Primary 1 syllabus, will be taught in Kindergarten 2.

Numeracy
Numeracy skills are systematically introduced to the children at various stages. The Pre-Nursery and Nursery children will master the concept of numbers through fun pre-number activities, songs and rhymes. For the kindergarten levels, children would also carry out hands-on activities and play games that will help them to fully grasp the mathematical concepts such as number operations, problem solving, measurement and spatial awareness.

Motor Skills
Our outdoor play area is designed to allow children to develop their gross motor skills through active play and exploration. Specific activities are planned each day to ensure a balanced development of essential motor skills. We have in place a wide variety of outdoor activities like water play, sand play, cycling, relay games, obstacle courses and a playground equipment for climbing, sliding and balancing. In the process of engaging in these activities, children will get to learn important values like co-operation, turn-taking and teamwork.

Young children, especially the children in the Pre-Nursery and Nursery classes, need to develop good fine motor skills, like handling utensils, grooming and cutting etc. Hence, we provide ample opportunities at the learning corners for the practice of such skills.

Aesthetics (Art & Music)
ART VOYAGE
Art is a catalyst for creative and active learning in children's early days of development. In Little Big, we begin the Voyage by creating an energizing experience to nourish children’s aesthetic sensibilities and inventive capacities. Through art, our little artists learn to value their own uniqueness and to appreciate the individuality of others. Children will be introduced to the various styles and techniques used by famous artists.

Our Art program also emphasizes on the basic literacy in art - the ability to understand art concepts such as colour, texture, line, shape, space and form. Application and translation of this understanding is done through children's own involvement in the whole process of experimenting various art techniques. All these activities take place in our Art Room – a specially designated space created for children's free artistic expression.

While the process can be taught, Little Big believes that what we desire our children to capture is the inspiration, creativity and enthusiasm to set them on a creative Art voyage.
MUSIC
Many studies have shown that music enhances other learning, such as the acquisition of language, listening skills, math skills, auditory discrimination, social understanding, and personal discovery. Our objective is to introduce children to music in an environment that is both fun and nurturing. Ultimately, we hope to inspire a passion for music in every child. Hence our music program is designed to include stories that incorporate music and movement, and the exploration of all musical instruments for all children.

Environmental Awareness (World Knowledge)
Environmental awareness helps children develop an understanding of the world around them, providing the foundation for learning in science, history and geography. Built into our program are opportunities to engage their senses to find out how things work, conducting investigations and manipulating objects. In the early years, learning science should be based on a sense of wonder and joy of discovery.

Social Awareness and Character Building
In line with the philosophy of Little Big, we strongly believe in building and developing the character of a child. By creating a positive environment of affirmation and encouragement, we aim to develop the child’s self-worth and self-confidence. Through stories, modeling from teachers and social interaction with peers, children will learn to understand concepts like respect, responsibility, co-operation, love, trust, kindness, generosity and self-control.
